Heavy Lifting Terminology Explained

The heavy lifting industry is huge, as you would expect, and if you are involved in planning a project that requires heavy lifting, some of the terms used can be confusing for a person who is not in the industry.

Here are some of the terms used in the heavy lifting sector.

  • All terrain crane – As the name implies, this crane can go almost anywhere and with hydraulic legs, the crane operator is able to create a solid foundation for a safe lift.
  • Crane hook – This is a metal hook that is self-closing and the crane attaches to this.
  • Crawler crane – Rather than wheels, a crawler crane runs on caterpillar tracks, which allows the machine to access most places.
  • Gantry crane – This type of crane operates from a steel framework and it can move forward, backward and sideways.
  • Jib crane – A jib crane has a horizontal beam that extends; it can be fitted to a wall, while large jib cranes are fixed to the floor and can swivel in all directions.
  • Loader crane – This is a pivoted arm that is attached to the rear of the cab on a flatbed truck, which is used for loading and unloading.
  • Mobile crane – The most common type of crane, a mobile crane can position itself directly at the lifting site and can travel on the roads; a mobile crane can typically lift 500 tons and sometimes several units are required for a single lift, which would be a very complex operation. If you need such a machine, Perth crane hire is available 24/7 from a leading crane hire company.
  • Shackle – A shackle is a U-shaped piece of steel with a pin that can be unscrewed and removed to attach a load, then replaced to secure the sling.
  • Slings – Slings are typically made from strong canvas with a loop at each end and operators feed the slings under the load before slipping the loops over the crane hook.
  • Tower crane – A tower crane is typically used for mega construction projects and would be erected on the top floor of a skyscraper, or it runs along the side and can be added to with steel sections to raise the crane.
  • Vehicle mounted crane – Any crane that is mounted on a vehicle is called a vehicle mounted crane; a mobile and loader crane are examples.

When looking at crane hire outfits, choose one that is experienced and established and your project should be completed according to schedule.
